Airport Inspections

ZeeDrone worked with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) to improve the inspection procedure of the Automated People Mover (APM) elevated guideway at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

ZeeDrone was able to scan the entire guideway within half the time of traditional in-person inspection methods. The GTAA was also able to keep the train operational throughout the entire inspection, which will result in considerable cost savings in replacement buses during future inspections.

ZeeDrone is the first partner to have utilized drones for the structural inspection of the APM Guideway at Toronto Pearson International Airport

High Quality Data

The APM guideway was inspected via 4K videos shot at 60 frames per second. These videos were taken from eight angles around 76 spans of the structure. ZeeDrone was able to provide the GTAA with over 635 GB of high quality video data.

 Maintain Operations

With traditional inspection methods, the GTAA needed to shut down the APM train and replace the service with buses. This disruption to airport operations came at a significant cost. With ZeeDrone, the GTAA was able to keep the trains running through the entire inspection process.

Custom Flight Planning

Inspecting the APM guideway required detailed planning with the GTAA and coordination with active airport operations. Following a site walk with the client, a set of drawings and maps were marked with takeoff locations, acceptable walking areas, signage locations, and other important notations for each flight day.

Rapid Regulatory Approvals

This project could only have been closer to Toronto Pearson International Airport if it was on the runway!

After developing a thorough flight plan with the GTAA, ZeeDrone was able to receive regulatory approvals typically within 24 hours of request.
